John
Calvin, Martin Luther and Sunday Software present...
Cal and Marty's Scripture
Memory Game
an interactive computer
game you can use again and again and again,
and can put your own verses and content into it.
Cal & Marty got it
figured out!
Students and/or Teachers edit in their own verses, then
study the verse before unscrambling it against the clock.
Students and/or
teachers can also add comments
and quizzes to each verse!
Cal & Marty CD includes a
scoreboard to track
individual students, encouraging them to improve their score, and
giving you a tool to see which verses they've mastered.
Bonus feature: The CD also has a number of brief
animated talks presented by Cal and Marty about various aspects of
the Protestant Reformation.
Game
Play
Students select a verse they want
to study. They have 30 seconds to study it, then the verse is scrambled.
Then the clock starts ticking and they have to drag the words into the
correct order. When done, Cal or Marty have a few words and then a
"verse comment window" and a 3 question quiz pops up. Cal & Marty
are there the whole time watching you and talking to you.
Here's a demo page of "Humming Marty"
(demo works in Internet Explorer only).
You or
your students EDIT IN THE VERSE, create the COMMENTS, and add
up to a 3 question QUIZ about the verse. The game comes with
several verses to get you started. Putting the verses IN the game helps
with memorization, and allows you to use any translation you wish.
Marty's
Amazing Innovation:
Cal & Marty's
clock ticks "up".
Marty thinks that amazing
because students can have as much
time as they need to get the verse right. Of course, Cal and Marty are
watching and will give students a lower score for a high time.
But your students can always try again (which is the plan) to
get a better score. If they are stuck in a verse, students can
click the ASK CAL or ASK MARTY buttons which will put a key word
in the correct spot. However, this too will cost them points.
The STATS
screen
will track their progress for each verse and Cal & Marty
will appear on screen to help them.
Cal &
Marty have quite the sense of humor.
This is surprising given that A)
this is a scripture memory game; and B) John Calvin and
Martin Luther, your onscreen animated hosts, were not known for
their mirth. After this CD, you'll never be able to get these
two fun-loving, singing reformers out of your head. We'd like
to apologize ahead of time to our German and French brothers
and sisters, and all Luther-anians and Calvinistas.
Our heroes in this CD have a little too much fun.
Cal & Marty appear courtesy
of some Fun
Technology
--TALKING CALVIN AND LUTHER HEADS
make this program unique and fun to use. Cal and Marty appear on screen
to encourage your students. Their eyes follow your student's mouse
pointer across the screen. They blink, they mutter, they scowl, they comment, ...and
Marty has even been known to hum a few bars. Furthermore, your
kids can play with Cal and Marty's heads using their mouse. (Check
out teaching tips for this secret "how to" info.)
How
did Cal and Marty get like this?
We animated their famous portraits with
some cool British facial animation software. This is the first commercial
game to use this technology. --And the effect is so fun your
kids will want to do many more memory verses ~and improve their
scores on those they've already played.
Special
Features:
Verse Editor !!! --type in your own verses, or
better yet, let
the kids do it. It is really
easy. Cal & Marty comes with some famous verses already edited
in, but you can change these if you like. You can type in single
verses, or sets of verses to be part of a group. Students select
individual verses from the group to work on. Cal & Marty's
verse editor is really easy to use and versatile.
Check out
our teaching tips for Cal & Marty which give you some inside tips
on working with verses.
We did NOT put a bunch of
ready-made verses on the CD.
Only some. Why? Because
you'd want the verses in a different translation the moment we added our
versions. Plus...it's the Editor! Let the kids use it...it helps
them memorize, and the LIKE using it.
Study
Note "Editor"
--add
your own study notes/reflections to each verse which pop-up after
the verse is unscrambled.
This
is a "FIRST" for scripture memory game software.
Cal thunk it up.
Quiz "Adder"
!!! --add up to 3
multiple-choice quiz questions per verse which pop up
after the unscrambling.
This
is yet another "FIRST" for scripture memory game software.
Marty claims credit for this idea.
See
a screenshot of the easy to use Verse Editor, which includes "add quiz"
and "add comment" functions
STATS --see who has what scores for
each verse. Cal and Marty keep track of everybody and encourage
them to get even faster at unscrambling verses. Cal likes to
sit in the Stats screen and heckle your students.
History --learn a little bit about who John Calvin
and Martin Luther were from none other than Cal & Marty themselves.
When asked, our heroes will also talk about What is the Reformation?
and What is a Protestant?
Cal & Marty talk about important stuff, but they do it
in an eye-ball attracting way. The 3-D animation of their facial
features is really quite amazing.
And we PROMISE:
Episcopalians and
Methodists will not feel left out. Cal and Marty belong to everyone in
the Church. They're cool.

WHO DID IT?
Cal & Marty is made by Neil
MacQueen (Sunday Software) and Mike Gale (Sonsoft) --the guys
who brought you Good Sam
the Samaritan and Fall
of Jericho.
Is This a Lutheran or Presbyterian specific
CD?
No. Even though Cal = John Calvin, and Marty
= Martin Luther, and even though they do tell you a little bit
about themselves in the "History" section of the CD,
the program is mainly a scripture memory game with them as goofy
hosts. The program itself is not just for
Calvinists and Lutherans.
Do you have to be able to READ to
use this CD?
It helps. But surprisingly, a lot of
little kids enjoy trying to unscramble simple sentences and pieces of
verses (such as "The Lord is my Shepherd"). They do it by recognizing
the shapes...and our goal is to help them learn the verse, not to read,
so we're cool with it! But older kids and youth, even
adults, really appreciate the sophisticated technology that brings Cal
and Marty to life, AND the verse editor...they love "programming" the
program.
A Couple of REVIEWS:
My husband Mitch, a PCUSA minister,
has always known Calvin was french, but never wanted to think
about it. You have burst his little bubble. We have decided you
guys must be Python fans like us! Fun game. -Leigh
Cal & Marty are a hoot! -
Melissa K., Washington DC
Once again Sunday Software and
Sonsoft you have exceeded our expectations. I had to immediately
call my pastor to come in and see the "talking Reformers."
We eagerly unscrambled verse after verse so that we could hear
Martin Luther with his cool blue sunglasses (talk during the
quiz). Could you make a Confirmation program starring these fellows?

Another great software title,

Hey Neil.... What happened to Wordy the Scripture Memory Game
that used to be in the Sunday Software catalog?
We sold Wordy for six
years. It was, in its day, the only scripture memory game program
with a verse editor. But Wordy was starting to look a
little "old" and it had some technical bugs that would
occasionally lock up a game. There were also some features we
wished it had. So we decided to make our own program. Cal &
Marty is easier and more fun to use than Wordy, has many
more features than Wordy, and has a more modern look and
feel (including animation).
