If Cal or Marty’s head looks something like this –>>

Then you need to make a simple change to a file in the installed Cal & Marty folder on your computer.

How to: Navigate to your installed Cal and Marty folder on your computer, Double Click the “rendering.exe” application, and check the unchecked option (it’s preset to one, so check the OTHER option). The default is “software” but many newer computers prefer “hardware.”  This solves the problem unless your computer has been compromised by a papist plot, or your drivers are mismatched (more about that below).

Rendering.exe doesn’t reform your computer; it only applies the correction to how Cal and Marty’s animation is handled by your graphics chip.  John Calvin reminds you to run this patch while logged in as the admin to your computer, otherwise, you won’t have permission to do it, or may need to do it each time you start the program. You can right click the rendering.exe application and select “Run as Admin.”

If popping the Rendering.exe switch did NOT reform your problem…

It is very likely that you upgraded your unreformed Windows 7 computer to Windows 10 and the older display driver that came with your equipment doesn’t let W10 make the change.  If that’s the case (that you have older computer equipment that’s been updated to Windows 10, then we know from some customers that their graphics driver on the older computer isn’t 100% compatible with some Windows 10 huggabuggas, and thus, the simple rendering.exe app we put in Cal and Marty cannot get Windows 10 to make the change from “software to hardware rendering.”  This is one of those common “driver issues” that happens when upgrading the OS but not the hardware, and discovering that your graphic chipset manufacturer never released a W10 compatible version.

But….here’s the solution!

1. Download the latest graphics driver for your computer’s “graphic chip set.”  Even if the driver download site doesn’t mention Windows 10, download it anyway. To find out which graphic chipset you have, and thus, which driver you need, RIGHT click an empty part of your desktop and select Graphic Properties. Depending on which brand of graphics chip you have an info center will pop up. Write down the info about the display graphic chipset and driver and then go to that manufacturer’s website to download the latest driver for that chip.

2. After downloading the latest display driver for your graphics display chip, you can often install it by yourself if the display driver download came with its own installation utility (most do). Otherwise, follow the instructions in the following youtube video showing you how to MANUALLY install a downloaded driver for Windows 8 and 10.  (Windows 10 cannot automatically install many ‘older’ drivers. You have to manually install them.)

3. Now re-open the Rendering.exe application and select “hardware” to tell your chipset how to handle the animation.

How to COPY and PASTE a VERSE SET from one computer to another

Cannot copy or open a verse set, or can’t find the file you think you saved?

Trying to find the Question File you created and saved?

This is more complicated than you’d think because Windows 7, 8, and 10 actually store Cal and Marty’s verse set text files in a special secure folder and not the same folder where the program’s executable files get installed. It’s a dumb security thing.  So if you have a previously created verse set text file from another computer that you want to install onto your computer, then you need to PASTE that file into the correct folder which is buried in your AppData/Local/VirtualStore/ProgramFiles (x86)/ Cal and Marty folder.  Drill down through those folders in File Explorer until you find the Cal and Marty folder and then paste your new file into it!

How To Make the Game Window Fill More of the Screen

Due to the drag and drop nature of the game, Cal and Marty has a fixed screen size. However, in Windows 7, 8, and 10, you can “SCALE” (zoom) your Display resolution to make the game appear larger on your monitor.  See the graphic here on the right. This will affect how all programs appear on the screen, so you should be prepared to return the setting back to 100% after using the game.

**Notice the comment on the graphic (right) that tells you that the location of the “scale” setting is different in Windows 8 vs 10.  Learn more here.

How to Delete a Player’s Name from the list:

Open the file”PlayerNames.nam” located in the main directory of the program. (c:\programs(x86)\calandmarty). It is a text file which can be opened and edited with Windows Notepad.

WAVE32.OCX Error Message

If you get a “wave32 ocx error” msg when starting up the game…

–you may have security software running that’s not allowing Cal and Marty to register wave32,

–or you recently upgraded to a new version of Windows and need to reinstall Cal & Marty,

–or you may be logged in as a User without full admin privileges.

Solutions:

First… be sure you’re logged is as the Admin on the computer. See if that corrects the issues. If not, uninstall the game (using either the Windows uninstall program feature, or by putting the original CD in the drive and running the Installshield setup program and accessing the REMOVE feature).   Then REBOOT and RE-INSTALL the game.

If that doesn’t solve it on Windows XP or 7 computers, uninstall again, but this time when you reinstall, CHANGE the default destination directory (c:\programs86x) to C:\CalandMarty (a new folder of your own naming).  Then, continue on with the installation making sure the game installs into your new folder.

Note: We know that in Windows 10, you must be logged in as the Admin, and not a limited user account, in order for the wave32 error to go away. Wave32.ocx is a Microsoft “ActiveX” file. ActiveX files have been known to be targets for malware, so Windows doesn’t let non-admin users to execute them anymore.

Verse FREEZES during Scrambling

Shorten your verse length by a couple of words. Apparently, on SOME video card/drivers/PCs, a long verse bumps into something in the display window and “that’s that” as they say in Geneva. (We’ve only found this to be a problem with one Windows XP PRO user. If it happens to you, let us know.)

Cal’s Head Moves and Speaks for a while without Sound at Opening and Main Screen

This was reported by one XP Pro user. They updated their version of XP Pro with “Service Pack 1” from Microsoft’s website and this took care of the problem. Something probably in the way XP Pro was mangling the video driver.

Your Verse Editor crashes, freezes, or gives you a BUFFER error message in the Editor.

This only happened in the original v1.0. You need to buy the newer version.

Which version do you have?
To be sure, use Windows explorer and example the “date” of the calandmarty.exe file at c:\programs\calandmarty

Can’t see the Menu Buttons or Calvin’s head on right side of screen

You need to set your screen resolution to 800×600. It’s probably set to 640×480 right now and is therefore cutting off about 1/3 of the program’s menu. The other possibility is that you have our “Vatican Edition” which cuts off their heads automatically.

You get this error message:  “Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program C:\Program File\Cal and Marty\CalandMarty.exe abnormal program termination”

The customer who reported error this found that somehow the verse they had created had become corrupt and the program would terminate as they were trying to edit it or use the verse. Solution: Save created verses to another folder for safekeeping, then delete the entire program using Add/Remove programs. Then check to see if c:\Program File\Cal and Marty folder is gone from your harddrive. Reinstall the program.

339 Runtime Error on Windows XP

If you install and run Cal & Marty from the main “ADMIN” user account the program installs and runs fine. If you switch to a limited account on the same machine to keep the kids out of your Windows files, you will get the 339 runtime error about an ocx file even though all program files seem installed. If you install the program from the limited account, you get the same problem. However, if you upgrade the limited account to admin, install the program and switch the account back to limited, it works fine. It’s some sort of registration issue with Win XP and the ocx file. So either run Cal & Marty only from the admin account, or install/switch as mentioned in the bold text. (Thanks to Techie Tim Marino who worked out this solution at his church).
