Sunday Software’s Exclusive Tech Notes and Patch
for getting KP4’s animated stickers to work in Windows 7, 8 and 10
After years of waiting for Broderbund to solve their own problem of getting the Kid Pix animated stickers to work in Windows 7 (then 8, then 10), I finally figured it out myself. You need to have a particular version of the KP.exe application file installed on your Windows computer to correct the problem. Problem is, Broderbund issued several different versions of that KP.exe file –many of which perpetuate the problem. In order to help our customers and schools around the country that Broderbund left in the lurch, I have copied that ‘exe’ file into a zip file and made it available for download. Just follow the instructions below. The retail version of Kid Pix Deluxe 4 is no longer available. This patch simply solves a legacy problem for many of the different retail version of KP4 that they sold (but not all). If it doesn’t work for you, I can’t help you.

P.S. This patch file does NOT work for the “network” editions of Kid Pix sold to schools. It only works for the fully-installed-to-your-harddrive edition sold as the ‘retail’ version by Broderbund. If you have the school network edition, you need to buy the newer version of Kid Pix “3D” found by searching the web.
Quick instructions for downloading and installing the patch:
(a longer step-by-step version is below)
This downloadable zip file contains a file named “KP-Sunday.exe.” After downloading and unzipping, you need to copy KP-Sunday.exe file into your installed KP program folder (which is Programs(86x)/TheLearningCompany/KidPixDeluxe4). Then, delete the existing kp.exe file in the KP4 folder, and rename KP-Sunday to kp.exe. This will fix the animated stickers problems and keep your KP desktop shortcuts functional.
The Longer Version….
The problem with Kid Pix 4
In some versions of KP4, the animated stickers and animated graphics appear as ‘blank’ boxes with a red border when the kids drag them onto the screen to make a picture.
Over the years, Broderbund released several different versions and updates to Kid Pix 4th Edition. ONLY ONE of those versions worked in Windows 7 (and subsequently 8 and 10). We always stocked the technical version that worked. But due to packaging changes that started in 2013, it became very difficult for distributors to tell which version was the right one. And that meant a patch was definitely needed. However, Broderbund, a victim of mergers and acquisitions, never developed one.
Knowing which version USED TO work, I did a number of experiments to see if we could create our own patch. The alternative was to stop selling it, and move to “KidPix 3d” which is twice the price as KP4 and nearly the same program. Working with two test churches, we created a downloadable patch that solves the problem! Get it below.
1. Go to Important Technical Notes and Helps | Rotation.org to download my Kid Pix fix file.
Save it to your Desktop. It’s only 813kb so it should download fast.
2. After downloading, double-click KP-Sunday.zip to “unzip” it.
Doing so will create a folder with the file KP-Sunday.exe inside it. You should now be able to open that folder and see the file: KP-Sunday.exe. (We had to zip the exe file because many security programs don’t let you download an exe file all by itself.)
3. RENAME KP-Sunday.exe to “kp.exe” (by Right clicking it and selecting rename).
4. COPY your new “kp.exe” file and PASTE IT into your installed Kid Pix folder. Your computer will ask you if you want to replace the existing file, and the answer is YES.
Kid Pix is located on your computer at C: /Program Files (86x) / The Learning Company/ Kid Pix Deluxe 4
5. Right click in a blank space within that folder and select PASTE. This will paste kp.exe into that folder.
6. Double click the kp.exe file to start the Kid Pix program.
Kid Pix should start up just fine. You now want to test the animation stickers to see if they appear on your drawing screen when you drag them from the animation pallet.
7. Click the DOG icon on the left-side menu bar to access animated pictures.
8. Select from one of the many animated pictures seen on the bottom pallet.
Drag one onto your drawing screen. It should appear, whereas before the fix it would just be an empty box.
9. Click the green PLAY arrow on the lower right corner of the KP screen to see the picture move.
10. Woot! –the animations animate!
OTHER TECH REMINDERS:
You need the latest version of Quicktime for Windows to use KP4 on Windows 7. Version 7.7.9. You can download it for free from www.apple.com/quicktime
You may need to Right Click the executable and select “Run as Administrator”.
