I wrote this guide for my own class use. It details each episode and each chapter in each episode, including KEY DIALOG you’ll want discuss with your students, and what sections you will want to skip. It’s a 10 page PDF, which may seem like a lot, until you realize there are 4 – forty minute episodes in the movie. My classes are only 55 minutes long so I needed to know where to start, skip, and stop to fit it all in.
Why I love this movie about Joseph
Joseph is my favorite movie in the Turner “Bible Collection” of movies. Very well done, straight on the story, wonderful key dialog, and compelling drama without Hollywood getting in the way. They did it right. Doesn’t hurt that they hired Ben Kingsley to be Potiphar, and Martin Landau as Jacob. You can buy Joseph DVD from many different online outlets for about $17.

HERESY! I know some teachers prefer to teach the “technicolor dreamcoat” version of the story, -even using that movie. I think it’s because they are afraid the kids won’t like the “real” drama. They think kids need the glitzy musical. They do not. The Joseph DVD is very good. I like “Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat” …but it is “Joe lite”.
Paul Mercurio’s portrayal of Joseph in the DVD movie is TEN TIMES MORE POWERFUL than Donny-Joe and Pharaoh Elvis.
Tip to Lesson Schedulers:
Don’t freak that Joseph the DVD and story is so long! Joseph is a HUGE and MAJOR Old Testament story. It also conveys major content about God, God’s plan for redemption, and the concepts of PERSONAL INTEGRITY and honesty in one extremely MEMORABLE story line. Hard to find one great story that has as much as Joseph’s story. The story deserves our time.

After viewing the movie, some weeks later, “review” the story using our Joseph’s Story CD.
Joseph’s Story CD is a 40 minute adventure lesson taking the player through the main points of the Joseph story. Especially after viewing the DVD, the software CD will be a great REINFORCEMENT of the story, and help salt it into long term memory. This is how I did it with my Middle Schoolers at my church. We waited three months after we showed the four episodes, and then used the software to recall and refresh their memories. When you teach like that, the brain knows to store the memories deeper.
**Old Testament Gospel?
Yes! For instance, did you know that Joseph’s Egyptian name, “Zaphenath-paneah” …given to him by Pharaoh, means “SAVIOR” ?? It does! Joseph is a Christ-figure who’s suffering is part of God’s plan for redeeming Israel. This theme is seen in the movie as well, including Joseph’s quoting of Psalm 22, “My God My God, why have you forsaken me?”
