Quicktime UN-install, RE-install Problem Solved!
The problem: When you go to install or run one of our CDs, like the Ten Commandments or Abraham and Sarah CD, “Quicktime” keeps asking to install itself from the CD. (Quicktime is an Apple program for Windows that runs videos and menus).
Important Related Post: Do not uninstall Quicktime. Get the latest version of Quicktime.
Understanding what’s going on…
Some older applications search your system at installation or startup of the older program to see if you have Quicktime installed. If it didn’t find a newer version of Quicktime on your system, then the application offers to install the version found on the disk you purchased. This was a typical practice in years past. If the installer doesn’t find the version they expect, they prompt you to install the version of Quicktime on the CD.
Problem is….
If you were running this older CD on a newer system such as XP, Vista and Windows 7, the older program’s Quicktime installer may not be able to discover that you have Quicktime 7+ already installed on your system. Why? Because somewhere along the line Apple made changes to how Quicktime identifies itself to older versions of Quicktime and older installers/applications, and Windows Vista/7. We also know that some earlier versions of Quicktime, when installed, didn’t correctly report themselves to your system registry, and thus, the CD you’re attempting to install can’t see your existing version of Quicktime.

See our amazing Elijah & Jonah CD
4 different lesson stories: (1) Elijah on Mt. Carmel-The Still Small Voice, (2) Elijah helping the Widow of Zarephath, (3) Elijah passing the mantle to young Elisha. And… (4) The entire story of the irascible Jonah and his very patient God. Presented in an interactive, animated, comic book-like interface with pop-up lesson content, quizzes and games. Ages 6 to 17.
So each time you tried to run the Ten C’s program, for example, its embedded installer went into a loop and kept prompting you to install Quicktime 5 from the CD. And Quicktime 4/5/6 don’t work on Vista or Windows 7.
“The answer” is to “UN-install all versions of Quicktime,
…AND ALSO UN-install both Apple Software Update, and Apple Application Support utilities.
You do this by going into your Windows Control Panel, opening up your installed programs utility, scrolling down to Apple Software Update and Support Utilities, highlighting them, and clicking UNinstall/remove. (No worry, these programs will reinstall when you follow the next steps.)
then REBOOT your computer for the uninstalls to take effect,
and then install the latest free version of Quicktime for Windows from apple.come/quicktime
Now when you go to run or install the program from us, it will correctly see that you have the right version of Quicktime and not prompt you to install a copy from the CD.
If you don’t un-install these QT related utilities, then the re-install of Quicktime won’t solve your problem.
You will see both the Apple Update and Apple Application Support files listed the control panel when you click “Programs and Features” in the Windows Control Panel (this is the same window where you can select “uninstall” to get rid of a program).
Another Quicktime Note:
If Quicktime asks “would you like to search for other versions installed on your system” (or something like that) always tell it “No” or “Skip.”
